We Are Doers. Not Dreamers.
HATCH Big Sky 2017 participants had the honor of being deeply grounded and profoundly inspired by Samantha Ramirez Herrera’s talk about her experience as a businesswoman, activist, mother, and one of the United States’ 800,00 DREAMers. Samantha is CEO of Offtharecord.com, a creative content agency and digital magazine run by POC with a focus on uplifting marginalized voices. Samantha is also the founder of the Kick Ass Girl Pow Wow, a digital platform which celebrates and highlights girls and women who live OUTLOUD. She is a filmmaker, creative director, writer, mother, and a proud Mexico-born DREAMer and DOer.
In 2012, President Obama signed an Executive Action to establish Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), an immigration benefit that allows undocumented immigrants who were brought to the USA before the age of 16, meet specific educational requirements, and do not pose a security or criminal threat to obtain temporary permission to stay and work in the USA. The primary purpose of DACA is to remove immigration enforcement attention from these “low priority” individuals, so they can pursue their dreams and the Executive Branch can focus enforcement on new arrivals and people who have committed crimes.
Now, over 800,000 young people with DACA are working, studying and contributing to society. People like Samantha Ramirez-Herrera, a young entrepreneur who is paying taxes and creating jobs for American workers. The Trump Administration rescinded DACA in September 2017, leaving people like Sam uncertain about their future in the United States.
