HATCH NextGen Big Sky 2017 Testimonials

______

No words can describe the magnitude of the impact HATCH 2017 had on me. I connected both with incredible people and myself in such a special way. My fellow NextGens have truly become lifelong friends. I found a meaningful mentor and am maintaining a really special relationship with her to ensure we reach our potential. I came to HATCH terribly unsure of what I wanted to do with my future, and left HATCH with a clear vision and intention itching to get started. I saw some of the best elements of humanity that exist. I heard tragic stories and committed to plans to take action. With my passion of oral storytelling, I believe I can play a part in helping Dreamers, people in marginalized communities, stopping violence, ending harmful stigmas, saving our oceans. With my passion, I will spread an awareness of the humanity in all of those who surround us. HATCH brought together a group of massively successful people, and it blew me away to have them listen to, support, and be there for me. HATCH has me inspired in a way that can only result in me changing the world.

As a young poet and activist, the HATCH Next Gen program has given me the tools, platform, connections, and support network to improve my work and grow as a person.  In my fellow Next Geners, I have found some of my closest friends and collaborators, including Taliq Tillman, a young activist from Rhode Island who I have begun working with on a new project to increase youth political involvement.  In many of the adult HATCHERS, I have found mentors, including Steve Connell, an accomplished spoken word poet who’s advice and wisdom has helped me grow tremendously as an artist. These connections, along with the incredible opportunities I’ve received through the HATCH Next Gen program, have truly been life changing.  I have been given the tools to further pursue passions I already new I had and have been introduced to others I didn’t. The way that HATCH brings together people of all different ages with different passions and professions is truly special and I’m so thankful to be a part of it.

– Royce Mann – High School sophomore

“HATCH is more than just an event, it’s a network”

I remember doubting this statement due to my own ignorance and understanding of what the world is. I had been confined to the safe and comfortable limits of what I knew.

HATCH has reminded me how to love and taught me how to love myself. It has showed me that the world is so much larger than I thought it was all but 6 days ago. It showed me the humanity in people I thought didn’t even care to look my way. It showed me how to work towards change in a very intentional way. HATCH has showed me that there is so much more than what you me see in front of you.

I thank you. With every step that I take from this point on, I’ll show you, and the HATCH community appreciation. You have showed me a beginning that I didn’t even know existed and I thank you for that.

~ Taliq Tillman______

Question: Where can one hang out with a marine biologist, an astronaut, an AI extraordinaire and an internationally renowned beatboxer?
Answer: HATCH

I was so incredibly honored to get to know my fellow #hatchers these past few days. The work they do and stories they told left me inspired and ready to hatch a better world. Leaving Big Sky and this cocoon of amazing humans was difficult, but I’m certain that HATCH is simply a catalyst for everlasting friendships and countless collaborations! HATCH is the home and tribe I had been looking for and could never find. To be surrounded by people that have the same vision and passion for a better world is a beautiful opportunity to be a part of. Through hearing the stories of others, I learned I can wear more hats than just one. HATCH taught me that whatever I envision can be true, if only I ask to be a part of it. Now that I deeply, truly, more tangibly know that this future can be real, I am more excited than ever to be a part of making it reality. After attending HATCH, I knew my life would never be the same.

______

HATCH is a once in a lifetime opportunity for students to collaborate with professionals from around the world to conceptualize, create, critique and experience ideas from both a composition standpoint as well as a participatory standpoint. We here at Big Sky Schools are very fortunate to have partners such as HATCH to expose our kids to some of the greatest thinkers in the world. Where HATCH and Ostinato differentiate themselves is in the commitment to interaction with students and staff. I can attest that our students would uphold that the Ostinato was certainly the highlight of their high school experience.”

~ Dustin Shipman, Superintendent of BS

______

Hatch presents tremendous opportunity for the Big Sky School District. To bring collaborators and mentors into the classroom in such a rural setting is a potent mixture for impact on youth. The Ostinato Project was such an incredible project for so many of our students in 2015/2016 school year, and it would be great to bring it back in full force! With the upcoming transition in the school to be an IB World School, Hatch mentorship will help us integrate global mindedness into the curriculum for all of our students.

From Hannah Herbst, America’s Top Young Scientist:

“I came to HATCH as a sophomore in high school. My school is unique – I was really starting out as a full time college freshman, with the age and social skills of a high school student. For the first time in my life, I was afraid to speak out in classes, ask questions, or contribute to discussion. Even though I knew I had earned the right to be in college, no matter my age, I felt like I didn’t belong. A month into the year, however, I came to HATCH at Moonlight Basin. A week in Big Sky that changed my life.

At HATCH, I met people in all different fields, gaining new appreciation for how the arts interacts with science. I met fellow students who have become close friends. Throughout the week, we merged between groups, learning about music and speaking, writing and engineering, how to look through the lens of someone else’s eyes to understand their perspective. I learned from a scientist from Germany. I learned from an activist changing the way others see disability. I learned from kids my age, tackling big problems with simple solutions, sharing their experiences with a confidence that was inspiring. I learned from every speaker and every person I came across, because not only was I learning from them, they were learning from me, too.

HATCH made me realize that it doesn’t matter that I’m young. It doesn’t matter that as an engineering student I may be the only girl in the room. What matters is that I have ideas, and a voice to share them. That I have questions that need to be asked. The HATCH experience was life changing for me. I have made connections with others that will last a lifetime. Now, 365 days later, I’ve shared my experiences at HATCH with many others, inspiring them too to take on the world with new perspective.”

______

Throughout my two years at HATCH, I became a different person. After the first year, I was more open to conversation and asking for what I needed. After the second, I have a stronger idea about what I would like to do once I graduate and how I’m going to get there. Everyone I talked to was always so willing to help and hear what was on my mind. This provided an incredible amount of support. I was able to open myself up to those around me and allow advice and comfort to be given to me. HATCH is so amazing to me how someone can get from the lowest point in their life to being incredibly successful with just a little perspective change. Many people I talked to had felt that they went through the worst but were now at their best. Whether it was leaving a job they hated, creating a piece of art, or helping to inspire the next generation, every person at HATCH did their part.

______

I have more confidence in myself, I am less introverted, I want to more of a difference in the world, I am organized on what I want to do, and most of all, I actually want to get stuff done instead of putting it off for later.

______

Hatch has inspired me. Hatch has also intimidated, confused, and exhausted me. I was lucky enough to experience an awe-inspiring Hatch, followed by a year of reflection, followed by another Hatch. My first Hatch Experience left me a little starstruck. All of my creative and artistic senses had been activated and I was inspired to pursue every creative endeavor I could dream up. It took a few months and a load of failures for me to refocus and channel my enthusiasm into a few specific areas. This rollercoaster process of creation and failure did a lot to mature me in a year. I returned to Hatch this year with more specific goals and interests, but still allowed myself to be immersed in the diverse, open-minded Hatch culture. For the second time, I am completely invigorated after a few days of Hatch. Hatch has repeatedly overwhelmed me in the best possible way. I feel that these little explosions of creativity, collaboration, and mentorship have forced to me re-examine myself as a person and as an artist. As a young person and artist, I am so grateful that I have been given the opportunity to repeatedly redefine myself while in a supportive environment of Hatchers. The amount of attention and support given to Hatch students was incredible. I appreciate the amount of work that (no doubt) went into creating the most structured, creative environment possible for students. Hatch is a home for creatives and creators of all ages from all walks of life. The impact of Hatch reaches far beyond the time, space and even conversations that it occupies during its short time in Big Sky. I am not able to describe Hatch in universal terms because the experience is so drastically different and uniquely mindblowing for each individual.

______

HATCH made me think about the world in ways I never would have thought of before. HATCH also connected me with people that I thought I would never need to know. But most importantly, HATCH showed me that when people of all different backgrounds come together to solve problems, anything can happen. HATCH was a place where you could go without being judged, and a place where you could just be yourself. HATCH was an incredible few days that taught me many things and made me want nothing more than to go again.

~ Liam Germain, Big Sky student

______

Hatch was life-changing. Before Hatch I had a blurry idea of what I wanted to do in the future. Hatch taught me to be confident in my ability as a creative individual. The people I met at Hatch are some of the greatest I have ever met. Hatch has provided many unforgettable experiences for which I am very grateful. In developing my existing strong suites and encouraging me to be more creative in my daily life, it has allowed me to go forth in life with a clearer idea of how to be successful as a creative person.

______

HATCH, for me, was an experience that is really hard to put into words. The hearts of people, who I connected to, will forever be apart of my own heart. And the amount of inspiration and superheroes that were in one room created this palpable energy. I walked away from the experience with a newly inspired view of the world, and a boat load of new friends, mentors, and family type figures. It was honestly one of the best weeks of my life.

HATCH has been the best thing that I didn’t even know I needed. I’m at a crossroads in my life where everything is changing and I didn’t have anyone being real with me. I had a bunch of counselors and therapists telling me everything will be okay, I will find my way, etc. but without offering me advice on how or companionship along the way. I was then last minute thrown into HATCH with no clue of what it was and how it would affect me. I spent three days not looking at a phone, reflecting on myself and making connections with people I would have never had the courage to talk to in the real world. HATCH gave me a place to go when I didn’t feel like I had anywhere else and gave me a family unique from anything I’ve ever had. The impact of that feeling of belonging will resonate with me for the rest of my life and will be carried with me in every relationship I will form and new places I will go.  – Emma Bowen

______

HATCH impacted me in a way I never thought it would. It blew my mind. It made me realize things about myself that I never thought of. It showed me that I was flawed, but so was everybody else. Everybody is different.  It also made me realize that I can make a difference. The age, size, or strength doesn’t matter. It is your will power and how much you care about something. Those are a few things HATCH taught me, and all have changed me for the better. – Della Levine
